Galleries: the layout decides the shape

1 min read

The new Gallery module: six gap-free layouts, focal points, tabs, a lightbox and galleries inside blog posts. One photo set, many places.

Abluo Journal: notes on calm publishing, from the team behind Abluo, the tiny CMS

Photos matter to a practice. A dental studio wants to show its rooms, a therapist a calm waiting area, a club its classes. Galleries have been part of Abluo for a while. With this release they become a proper module.

Small sets, composed freely

A gallery is a small, hand-ordered set: Exterior, Room 1, a specific treatment. A gallery section can combine several of them, as one continuous set or as tabs with an All tab first. A blog post can show one gallery below its text. Edit a gallery once and every place that uses it updates.

The layout decides the tile, never the photo

Mixed portrait and landscape photos used to leave gaps. Now every tile has a shape set by the layout, and each photo is cropped around its focal point, which is set once in the media library. Uneven last rows are rebalanced, so no photo is left alone on its row. The lightbox always shows the full, uncropped image.

Six layouts

  • Grid: equal tiles.
  • Featured: a large lead photo beside stacked tiles.
  • Wide lead: one full-width photo, then a grid.
  • Rows: justified rows that keep each photo’s proportions.
  • Masonry: columns with no cropping.
  • Carousel: swipeable, ideal in articles and on phones.

Accessible and searchable

The lightbox works with keyboard and swipe, keeps focus where it belongs and lets you link to a single photo. Galleries publish structured data and appear in the sitemap, so search engines understand them too.
